Growing competitiveness of Oceasia on show at NZ Open

The NZ Open delivered an exciting weekend of canoe slalom and kayak cross under hot, sunny skies, with New Zealand’s paddlers battling for national selection and testing themselves against competition from across Oceasia.  Although NZ's top three female paddlers were absent from the event it provided an opportunity for the next tier of female paddlers to battle it out for podium success.

The Chinese team, led by former CSNZ high-performance coach Michal Smolen, dominated the podium, showcasing their rapid development on the international stage. Australia’s Fergus Page Brown secured a podium finish for his nation, while Korea’s Junsu Na impressed with a bronze in the U18 Kayak Cross.

The event highlighted the growing competitiveness of Oceasia paddlers and the desire from all nations to continue supporting events that allow athletes to compete in the region.

A huge thanks to Grassroots Trust for their support in making this high-level racing opportunity possible for New Zealand athletes.
