The 2025 New Zealand Secondary School Whitewater National Championships brought excitement and fierce competition to Tekapo this April, hosted by Central Otago Whitewater. With 23 schools and 67 athletes from across the country, the event showcased the growing talent in canoe slalom, kayak, kayak cross, and team events.
Held on the Tekapo Whitewater Course — a favourite among paddlers for its clear alpine waters and technical features — the championships provided a perfect stage for emerging athletes to test themselves against the best of their age group. The multi-day event combined individual and team races, with athletes displaying skill, resilience, and camaraderie.
Kayak Cross, a fast-paced and thrilling head-to-head discipline, was a standout crowd favourite, highlighting the next generation of paddlers adapting to Olympic disciplines. Teams events added to the spirit of the championships, with school pride and strategy on full display.
Central Otago Whitewater received praise for their seamless hosting, with local volunteers and officials ensuring a welcoming environment for all participants and supporters. The event not only celebrated youth paddling but also strengthened connections across regions, inspiring many to continue their journey in whitewater sport.
Up next is the Canoe Slalom NZ National Championships being held over Easter.
