More than 400 of the world’s top young paddlers are set to descend on Foix, France, for the 2024 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships, running from July 8–13. Among them are future Olympians, current age-group stars — and 14 proud Kiwi athletes ready to take on the best in the world.
It’s a return to where legends began. Foix last hosted this pinnacle event 15 years ago, when future Olympic champions Jessica Fox (AUS) and Giovanni De Gennaro (ITA) announced themselves on the world stage. This time, a new generation will chase history on the same French waters.
New Zealand’s squad features seven junior and seven U23 athletes, supported by a multi-national coaching team of four, and the Canoe Slalom NZ General Manager acting as Team Manager. Flying the flag for Aotearoa at the official opening ceremony in the heart of Foix is U23 paddler Finn Anderson, in his final year in the age group.
Reflecting on the moment, Anderson shared:
“Being named flag bearer is a real honour. I’m excited about the new format, making my first U23 semifinal in Foix, and watching my teammates chase their goals too! I’m also looking forward to topping off the season with my first Senior World Championships — and it’s close to home in Penrith, Australia! Massive thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way. Ngā mihi.”
With world-class competition, rich history, and Kiwi pride on the line, the Foix World Championships promise an unforgettable week of racing. Stay tuned as our team takes on the world.
