Finn Butcher is an accomplished canoe slalom athletes, renowned for his speed, tactical intelligence, and fearless approach to racing.

Raised in Alexandra, Central Otago, Finn grew up in a family of adventure racers, where competition, resilience, and a love of the outdoors were part of everyday life. He was introduced to canoe slalom at just nine years old after attending a local “have a go” day on the river — an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for the sport.

Finn progressed rapidly through the national pathway, earning selection as New Zealand’s K1 reserve for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Since then, he has continued to refine his skills, improve his world ranking, and establish himself as a consistent contender on the international stage.

In 2023, Finn delivered breakthrough performances at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, finishing 13th in K1 and 11th in Kayak Cross, securing New Zealand’s Olympic quota place. Later that season, on the Paris Olympic course, he claimed a silver medal in Kayak Cross at a World Cup event — a clear signal of what was to come.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Finn made history, winning Olympic gold in Men’s Kayak Cross. His achievement marked a defining moment for New Zealand canoe slalom and cemented his place among the world’s elite paddlers.

Finn continues to be a driving force within the New Zealand team, inspiring the next generation through his performances, professionalism, and commitment to excellence on and off the water.
