In a thrilling display of skill, determination, and tactics, New Zealand athletes Luuka Jones and Finn Butcher have claimed top honours at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Cup held on Stade N Paris, France. Jones clinched the Women's Kayak Cross Gold Medal, while Butcher secured a remarkable second-place finish, earning the Men's Kayak Cross Silver Medal.
The final day of racing saw all four New Zealand athletes Jones, Butcher, Courtney Williams and Hannah Thomas progress from the time trial and round 1 heats/repechage through to the next round of racing. Butcher battling through to win the semi-final and guarantee a good starting lane, whilst Jones was dominant and out in front through each of the rounds.
Canoe Slalom New Zealand GM Pandora Fruean who was in Paris for the event expressed her pride in the athletes, saying, "Luuka and Finn's success at the World Cup is a testament to their hard work and talent but also to the village that surrounds these athletes. They have represented New Zealand with skill and sportsmanship, making our nation proud. We congratulate them on their well-deserved medals and look forward to what 2024 may bring ."
