Mangahao National Whitewater Park hosted the CSNZ January Selection Races in a week that started with persistent rain but concluded with fine weather and thrilling competition. Athletes demonstrated grit and determination, with no one dominating every run, resulting in exciting and closely contested racing.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of a Life Membership plaque to Carrol Walkley, a gesture that recognised his service since his membership was first awarded in 2015.
Behind the scenes, the Enironmental White Water Park Trust (EWWPT) team’s efforts in maintaining and enhancing the course were widely praised. Their work, combined with the use of upgraded kitchen facilities and a smart shelter, provided comfort and convenience for competitors and supporters alike.
Volunteers came together on Thursday for a working bee, further tidying the site in preparation for the event. The dedication of CSNZ volunteers and the Competitions Committee, along with support from Pelorus Trust, was instrumental in the event’s success.
The event highlighted the strength of the whitewater community, setting a positive tone for the year ahead. Next up NZ Squads Kayak Cross Selection Race, Vector Wero Whitewater Park, February 4th.
